Sports Injuries and the Wonders of Physiotherapy

There are a variety of sports injuries that this treatment may benefit from. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) fracture, which is an injury to the knee, is one. Sports practices that place a lot of demand on the knees—such as kickboxing, hockey, biking, skiing, basketball, and football—have greater risks of knee injury for athletes. Among individuals who play these sports, ACL is very popular.

Some ACL cases can be so serious that it may be appropriate to have surgery. Much the same, physiotherapy, before and/or after surgery, is almost always suggested. For the treatment of ACL, there are three main classes of therapy exercises that are recommended, the most common being the heel slides.

Basically, doing the heel slides involves lying down, bending the affected knee and foot on the floor, then slowly pulling the foot to the buttocks, and finally slipping the foot back out. This workout bends and expands the knee and can hurt, but it is successful. As a preparation for surgery, it is generally recommended, but sometimes it may also heal the injury and surgery may no longer be required.

It is also useful for elbow injuries such as elbow tennis. Tennis elbow occurs in sporting activities that include primarily powerful wrist and elbow movements, such as tennis and badminton. Tennis elbow physical therapy usually consists of a regimen of exercises and ultrasound treatments to relive pain by adding heat to the affected muscles. Often, ultrasound is also used for other sports injuries where muscle pain is present.

Massage is another method used for certain forms of sports injuries. In muscles, tendons and connective tissues, massage helps to relieve the tension. In overused muscle tissues, it is also used to crush or soften nodes that develop. Typically, the form of physiotherapy used depends about the origin of the injury, if it is induced through accident (such as colliding with a co-player in sports such as football or basketball), or by an improper movement of a portion of the body, or by pure physical overwork.
