If you’ve found a prospective mentor, the next move is to interview the person to assess compatibility, either by having a personal recommendation or doing an online search. It’s normally safer to meet at a Starbucks or any other neutral place with a prospective mentor. A few minutes of chat will allow you and he/she to share important personal details and to discuss your fitness goals briefly. If at this stage, you are given a positive feeling by the person sitting across from you it is time to ask some basic questions about their approach to personal training. The responses of a teacher to the following 3 questions should give you plenty of food for thought and help you determine whether they are right for you or not.
1. What are you going to help me meet my targets? An acceptable response to this question may be To help you reach your desired weight, I would work with you to create a diet that consists of 500 fewer calories per day than you’re currently consuming. Cutting 500 calories per day will cause you to lose around a pound per week and you’ll never feel hungry if you eat the right foods. To help you reach your strength and body-toning goals, we’ll be doing a strength training workout when we meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I’ll also encourage you to do a workout on at least two of the days when we don’t meet. Every Tuesday I’ll make adjustments to the workout based on your progress, including adding new exercises and/or discarding exercises that are too difficult or unpleasant.”
2. Are you planning to build a workout routine for me to do on days when we’re not meeting? This is an interesting topic because the reaction from the teacher can give you an indication about whether they actually want you to excel instead of simply having to get paid for each session. I’m glad you asked that, because what you’re going to do on days when we don’t meet applies more to your progress than what you’re doing when we practice. Few people can afford to have a trainer train them 5 or 6 days a week and the fact is that I can’t get you fit for one or two hours a week to prepare you. I’m going to be able to build a weekly schedule for you that will train you for one or two hours a week.
3. How do you better inspire consumers who are having trouble motivating themselves? This question is not answered correctly since each teacher has their own special approach to consumer encouragement. If you’re someone who doesn’t respond well to an intense “drill sergeant” technique, then you’ll want a trainer who uses constructive reinforcement as a motivator, of course. If on the other hand, with a trainer that is demanding and tough, you know you can produce great outcomes, that’s good too. Just bear in mind that it might be difficult to encourage yourself if getting berated is a required motivator when your mentor is not present. Long-term exercise achievement is possible for most people only after they have adopted a new, healthier lifestyle. More frequently than not, positive exercise and diet correlations produce the greatest long-term benefits.
